Bridge design / Maxwan architects

As part of a park competition in Kiev – Ukraine, Maxwan resolved a missing gap in the primary pedestrian path.

The solution goes beyond merely creating a bridge. It strives to create a signature place, within the park.

It avoids any of the assumed formal or structural gestures. By doing so, it creates an almost non-bridge.

The location offers a commanding view over the enter region, yet it spans a valley. The design sets out to create another hill in the landscape; a place to sit, hang out, enjoy the view, perform, take a nap, etc – like any key moment in a park.

In this way, a hill is created over a valley. The project uses a simple structural system – the arch – and spins it 360 degrees to form the hill.

For pedestrians and cyclists it offers views out, while simultaneously offering a visual interplay with the reflection of the cars passing below. The ‘bridge’, in its purist form, can be perceived as a solitary object.

The final design solution can shift to blur this simultaneous desire to create an object and to be just another great place in the landscape. Whether covered in grass, left polished white, punctuated by a simple reflecting pond, or with a series of extruded pedestals, the design strives to create an identity, but not necessarily to be a bridge.
