The Architectural Association (AA) London, is pleased to announce an exciting workshop in programme; and invites you to join us from June 14 to 24, 2014. AA Visiting School Jordan is a ten-day workshop set within the context of Amman, Petra and Wadi Rum. The workshop brings together network of distinguished international faculty and guests who will instruct participants on the cutting-edge of design methodologies in the Architecture, Engineering and Design disciplines today.© AA Visiting School Jordan
The workshop will focus on the potential embodied in natural morphologies within the
landscapes of South Jordan; rethinking current design practices and informing new design-research ideas.
The workshop also includes a series of events including guest lectures, panel discussions and open
reviews. Confirmed speakers include world-renown designer Ross Lovegrove who will give a keynote
lecture from the Wadi Rum Desert, in addition to Wael Attili of Kharabeesh, Giorgia Cesaro of UNESCO
and Julia Koerner of UCLA; further events will be announced in June. Participants of the workshop will also
receive a certificate from the Architectural Association, London.
Agenda:
The Jordanian desert ecology is a distinct unaltered antiquity, a magnificent heterogeneous landscape that
is emergent of fluid erosion processes which have occurred over fifty million years.© AA Visiting School Jordan
The bio-diversity of the
desert reveals a vast platform for research into natural artefacts. Participants will investigate natural
phenomena which include sand dunes, rock strata, rock bridges, canyon, gorge and mountain formations.
During the course of the workshop, participants will visit, examine and inhabit two UNESCO world heritage
sites: Wadi Rum and Petra; the later named as one of the World’s Seven Wonders.
Throughout the design-research workshop, participants will investigate the morphology of the desert and
its underlying principles and processes within a computational context; working towards the development
of algorithmically generated topologies. Participants will choose from a number of studios/units, to design
interventions at different scales from the material, architectural to the urban. The ambition is to reconsider
traditional design methodologies which are often limited to morphological abstraction; overlooking the
inherent potentials within natural systems.© AA Visiting School Jordan
The workshop will conclude with a public exhibition of
participants outcomes..© AA Visiting School Jordan © AA Visiting School Jordan © AA Visiting School Jordan
